Immigrated to Virginia in 1738 from Ireland. Believed to moved to Surry County from Orange in 1767. Applied for land grant in Granville County 12/20/1748, being that Orange County was formed from Granville County in 1752, this puts Thomas in Orange County. Had land on Tarrarat River adjacent to the Thomas Foster farm.

Notes for JAMES JARRETT MCCLESKEY:

James J. served in the service for the government by joining the Malita in 1837 and served to remove the Cherokee Indians from there land. He served as a Capitan.

He went to California gold fields in 3/14/1852 aboard the ship "Sea Bird" along with his brother Nathaniel Turk and his two sons, David Henerson and Joseph Howell. He apparently made a find for he returned to Georgia with enough money to pay all his debts.

After the death of his father, Ezekiel Jefferson Dunagan, Stephen and his siblings, Mary, George, Levi, and Dan were sent to live with his step-sister, Anna and Her husband James J, McCleskey.

The family moved to Marshall County Alabama in 1852 with relatives of the Wood and McCleskey families.

Stephen served in Co. B, 4th Alabama Cav. during the Civil War.

In 1862 he enlisted in the CSA in Marshall Co. Alabama

He is listed in muster rolls as Captain in Russell's Battalion, Partisan Rangers.

Notes for LEVI JEFFERSON DUNAGAN:

Levi was born May, 1831in Hall County, Georgia. He possibly moved to Arkansas some time around 1862 for there is a record that a Levi Jefferson Dunagan was a member of the Arkansas Calvary, Co "A" during the Civil War. He moved to Texas before 7/6/1866 because his daughter Mary Victoria was born in Texas on that date.

The move to Texas was a part of the general movement from Georgia by several family's, including the McCleskey, Dunagan, Wood.

Levi's son Ezekiel married Dovie Wood in Hood County 10/15/1873. They had children up to Ezekiel Thomas (Uncle Tom) born 9/17/1894 in Hood County. They then moved to Oklahoma, for their next child, Luther was born 5/8/1898 in Oklahoma. From this it indicates that the move was made between 1894 and 1898. This conforms to other data covering the Jone's family. Margaret J. McCleskey married a James David Jones and this family also moved to western Oklahoma in the 1890's from Hood County Texas. Margaret died in Custer County and was buried in a cemetery just out side Leedy. My grandmother, Louisa Dunagan daughter of Ezekiel and Dove spoke of Lorenzo Dow Jones many times. He was the son of Margaret and James Jones.

In as much as Levi would have been 60+ years old in the mid 1890, I assume that he went with his children to Oklahoma. He died in Oklahoma the date is not known at this time.

Notes for EZEKIEL DUNAGAN:

Ezekiel moved along with his family from Georgia to Texas in 1869, along with the families of Wood, and McCleskey, all friends, neighbors, and relatives while in Hall County, Georgia. At the time of the move Ezekiel was 15 years old. The group of families settled along the Paluxy River southwest of the present day Bluff Dale, Texas.

It is more than likely that Ezekiel's wife, Dovie Wood, was a member of the group moving from Georgia to Texas and they knew each other prior to arriving in Texas and marrying.

In 1897,Oklahoma was opened to Homesteaders and a group of the Dunagan family, including Ezekiel and his family moved to Oklahoma in search of free land, settling in the area around southwest Dewey County.

Being strict southern Methodists, the family was very dedicated to the church and did not believe in dancing, card playing, etc. but did entertain themselves with music, with all the members of the family being inclined to play an instrument or sing.

In about 1910 a tornado hit the area and caused much damage which almost left the family destitute. This disaster caused Ezekiel to leave Oklahoma and move to Oregon where he had friends living, but no relatives. He and his family eventually settled in Stayton, Oregon.

Notes for LOU MELVIN STURGIS:

When Lou left Oklahoma and moved to Corning, California he settled on a 35 acre farm four miles southwest of town.

After moving to Corning from Oklahoma, Lou worked for the Southern Pacific railroad as a construction Foreman building bridges and Tressel. He was away from home a lot, but a devoted father and husband when home.

In about 1953 he and his wife moved to North Sacramento and lived on Perktell Ave which was near the Nazarene Church, which they both attended regurly.

When "Annie" his wife got sick with the cancer, they went to stay with his daughter, Lena, who was married to Herbert Brown, in Lodi, California. This is where she died in 1953.

The house on Perktell was sold and Lou Lived with his youngest daughter, Irene and her husband Hollis in Sacramento, California.

Being from the "old school" he would trim his toenails with a knife. This resulted in him having an ingrown toe nail which became infected. Left unattended for a period of time, the condition became serious and he had to have his leg amputated. The shock and strain was to much and he died in the Sacramento County Hospital.

In pension forms filled by Joseph S. Sturgis, Lou's father he lists his children and has Lou named as Lewis Melvin. Possible that he just went by Lou as a formal name in lieu of Lewis.

Notes for HOLLIS SPENCER WILLIAMS:

Hollis born in Texas and moved to Pasadena, California with his parents some time around 1924 and grew to adulthood there. While a student at Pasadena College (now Point Loma Nazarene College) he met his wife Irene. He worked with his father in the carpentry/ contracting business until the start of world war II at which time he went to work for the Southern Pacific Railroad. At the end of the war he in partnership with his father he built homes and developed land in Lodi, California. One of the main streets in Lodi is Holly Drive which is named for him (Holly being his common name). In 1950 he and his father moved their business to Sacramento, California. He was in the contracting business until his death in 1970 from a heart attack. .He is buried in East Lawn Cemetery in Sacramento.
